Lee's Journey to Resiliency
Lee Murphy is a CF veteran, small business owner, and ultra trail runner from Hubbards, NS. Together with his wife Kate and their two children, Jack and Claire, they own and operate a tourism business called Anchorage House & Cottages.
For Lee, running is a way to stay physically active and gain insight into how his physiology impacts his mental health as he navigates life and parenthood. He uses running to set big goals and push his limits, leading to greater fulfillment and confidence by accomplishing difficult challenges.
Lee has been running trail ultras for four years, achieving first-place finishes in races ranging from 10km to 100 miles. Currently, he's been focusing on multi-day events such as the Divide200 in 2023 and winning the Keji Backyard Ultra in 2024: 54 yards (362km), earning a spot to compete in the Canadian BYU Team Championships in the fall of 2024. Most recently, he secured the top spot at Capes100m, setting a new course record of 19 hours and 52 minutes at the dark finish (157km).
As part of his training, Lee has maintained a run-streak since October 24th, 2022, running a minimum of 10km each day for 666 days and counting, regardless of the weather or his physical and emotional state. On particularly challenging days, he may find himself sitting on the porch, staring at his shoes, but he gets out for his run and is always glad he did.
Through this commitment, Lee has learned that consistency equals strength, not just physically but also mentally. Completing tough runs and ultras adds to the list of accomplishments he can draw upon when life throws challenges his way. Since he started running daily, Lee has enjoyed an injury-free life for over 600 days, despite previously struggling with shin splints and other pains. He still incorporates regular running regimens, including speed work, recovery days, varied terrain, and plenty of hills.
Before getting sober 12 years ago, Lee was a daily user, planning everything around his addiction. Now, he’s a daily runner with a strategy for a successful life:
- Found a passion (Running)
- Got addicted (Obsession)
- Goes on frequent benders (Ultras)
The rewards have been physical fitness, metabolic fitness, and mental and emotional fitness.
That’s why Lee has decided to join the team and share the message of Resilience Through Fitness!
